Big skies, open spaces and rolling countryside surround the historic market towns of Mansfield, Newark, Retford, Southwell and Worksop. Between them you’ll find pretty villages, rich in history, with their ancient churches and traditions, and magnificent country parks, once eminent ducal estates now affectionately known as The Dukeries.
Our fascinating and varied history can be traced from Ice Age man, much in evidence at Creswell Crags Prehistoric Gorge, to the time of legendary outlaw Robin Hood – come and see the church in pretty Edwinstowe where legend tells he married Maid Marion and, of course, visit his favourite hiding-place, Major Oak, in the depths of Sherwood Forest.

Retford and surrounding villages played a significant part in the real story of the Separatists and the Mayflower Pilgrims and from where millions of Americans can trace their ancestors, whilst Newark played a key role as a Royalist stronghold in the English Civil War and now is home to the UK’s only Civil War Museum.
